Reviews current issues in excitotoxicology research and emphasizes the N-methyl-{d}-aspartate (NMDA) receptor and its possible role in neurodegenerative diseases. Excitotoxins and neurodegenerative disorders are described within the categories of food excitotoxins; metabolic disorders; epilepsy, hypoglycemia and hypoxia/ischemia; and central nervous system (CNS) trauma (eg, dementia pugilistica); Alzheimer's disease; and Wernicke/Korsakoff syndrome. NMDA receptors and the developing CNS are discussed in relation to neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. The influence of NMDA receptors in memory impairment and aging is analyzed.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
