Apart from the fact that there is no readily available information on the blood supply of the lumbar vertebral column, there are aspects of this field of anatomy which should guide one’s surgical techniques, especially in hemorrhage control during spinal canal exploration. It is surprising to find statements in current literature about the inadequacy of the blood supply of the vertebral bodies.’ As the specimens illustrated in this chapter will show, the blood supply is very rich and not easily damaged, a fact of practical significance, for example, in those few cases where the use of interbody fusion may be indicated. The blood supply of the posterior spinal elements however, is much more susceptible to impairment following routine surgical approaches for combined spinal canal exploration and posterior spinal fusions. Closer study of the origins of vessels supplying the nerve roots and cauda equina, helps in the understanding of some of the mechanisms of symptom production in spi-
