Liquid diet technique is the most efficient tool for studying the effects of ethanol in controlled nutritional conditions. An overall formula is proposed that may be useful in most experimental conditions, with options for reduced dietary fat (to minimize hepatic fat accumulation) or increased dietary proteins to meet special needs (pregnancy and lactation). It is recommended that vitamins are kept separately from the other ingredients and should only be mixed together at preparation of the final liquid formula which should be refrigerated and stored in the dark for not more than 8 h.
