SUMMARY
An attempt is made to broaden the bases of genera and species occurring in the Palaearctic Region by lifting taxonomy out of the narrow rut of regional ornithology.
Examples are given of wide distributional gaps among certain palaearctic forms and of a closer relationship between Ethiopian and palaearctic genera and species than is generally admitted. These examples are by no means exhaustive but are in the nature of samples.
A more detailed note is given on the distribution, taxonomy and habits (including food-habits and inter-specific intolerance) of the genus Monticola, which exemplifies wide distributional gaps; and hypotheses are suggested to explain these gaps.
