The amounts of reduced ascorbic acid and its immediate oxidation products in the plasma and urine of patients treated with corticotrophin were determined. In patients with adequate ascorbic-acid saturation there was an increased urinary output, usually temporary. This increase was probably due to three causes: an increased renal clearance of ascorbic acid; a probable shift of ascorbic acid from cells to extracellular fluid along with the usual shift of water; and another unidentified mechanism causing an additional transfer of ascorbic acid from the cells to extracellular fluid. In patients with adequate ascorbic-acid saturation there was evidence for increased production of the immediate oxidation products of ascorbic acid. Control
