SFe0,~ molecules was compared with that of an 8-keV Cs+ atomic Ion beamfor samples of common organic pharmaceuticals. Both beams were operated In the static SIMS mode (plcoampere currents) and samples ranged from microgram to subnanogram quantities on metal substrates. The efficiency (secondary Ion peak Intenslty/prlmary beam in-tensity) for the molecular Ion peaks (+ H)+ of the pharmaceuticals was a factor of 9 to 24 higher for the molecular primary beam than for the atomic primary beam. This efficiency difference was reflected in the minimum detectable sample mass, which was a factor of 2 to 20 lower for the molecular beam.
