A novel hybrid method that couples a three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier– Stokes solver on graphics processing units (GPUs) to a free-vortex method wake is presented. This solver is extended to be executable across multiple GPUs and also allows for arbitrary grid motion in terms of translation and rotation. Solution algorithms used in this work take advantage of cache efficient data structures that optimize the memory used, while minimizing the computational time. Using the developed methodology, aerodynamic flow over representative two-dimensional and three-dimensional geometries are studied, typical to that of rotorcraft and/or wind-energy applications. Validation test cases include a translating RAE2822 airfoil, 2D rotating NACA0012 airfoil, pitching NACA0012 airfoil, non-lifting rotor, and lifting free-wake coupled rotor. Timing studies are also conducted and the results show an order of magnitude speedup over similarly structured CPU codes.
