Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with severe cognitive, behavioral,and functional impairment.Although its etiology is still unknown,it is generally accepted as related to the cholinergic deficit in the brain. In this paper,the cholinergic therapeutics for AD including the precursors of acetylcholine, the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, the postsynaptic muscarinic M 1 receptor agonists,and agents facilitating acetylcholine release were reviewed.
