Agar gel electrophoresis of single flies ofDrosophila melanogasterreveals three forms of hexokinase, called Hex-1, Hex-2, and Hex-3. A further lightly staining band cathodal to Hex-3 is present in extracts of male flies only. A survey of 70 laboratory stocks yielded three electrophoretic variants of Hex-3: a ‘fast’, an ‘intermediate’, and a ‘slow’ variant, but no variants of Hex-1 or Hex-2. Using the second chromosome mapping stockal dp b pr c px sp, the Hex-3 map position was determined to be 73± units. Zymograms of extracts of freshly laid eggs, and different larval, pupal and adult stages show that Hex-2 is active in all stages of development. Hex-3 is present in all stages of development except in freshly laid eggs. In total homogenates, Hex-1 and the male-specific band are restricted to late stages of adult development. Zymograms of individual larval and adult tissues are presented.
