Until recently roentgen examination of the intracranial basal cisterns required local subarachnoid injection of a contrast medium, negative or positive, which had an attenuation capacity differing considerably from that of the relevant ana tomic structures. A system for detection and image reconstruction, computer tomo graphy, introduced by HOUNSFIELD ( 1 9 7 3 ) and AMBROSE ( 1 9 7 3 ) , permits the mea surement of attenuation differences about 1 0 0 times smaller than those recorded by conventional roentgen examination. Thus, for the first time, cerebral paren chyma and C S F spaces may be distinguished without the use of contrast media. However, the close proximity of the basal cisterns to the bony skull base at present limits the possibilities of discerning these spaces, especially when they are narrow. GREITZ & HINDMARSH ( 1 9 7 4 ) reported that the intracranial C S F circulation could be examined using computed tomography after lumbar injection of a water-soluble contrast medium due to the fact that the medium was transported in the cranial direction by the normal C S F circulation. The results reported concerning the C S F dynamics also indicated the diagnostic potential of the method with regard to the examination of the anatomy of the intracranial basal cisterns.
