The dynamic of Japanese surf clams as they are in contact with and slide along the teeth of a hydraulic jet dredge are analyzed and the optimal curves for the teeth are discussed. Teeth angle is considered to be a function of the weight of the shell in the sand, the drag of the shell moving vertically, the drag of the shell moving horizontally, the static frictional coefficient between the shell and the teeth, shell length and buried depth. The parameters were measured under laboratory conditions, and the optimal variation in teeth angle for various shell sizes and depths was calculated at different points along the distance from the end of the teeth. The optimum teeth curves for a shell 10cm in length was obtained using these teeth angles.
