Over 2000 three-day chick embryos were exposed for 3-24 hour periods to atmospheres, at normal pressures, containing from 0 to 21% oxygen. Death rates, incidence of maldevelopment, and measurements of body size and weight were recorded. Regular quantitative relationships were observed between O2 level and duration of exposure on one hand, and death and abnormal development on the other. Embryo weight was not affected except after exposure to severe conditions. However, even though embryo age was kept constant, different combinations of O2 levels and exposure times induced qualitatively different kinds of anomalies. This indicates that there is more than one mode of action of hypoxia on developing organs.
