Four-mo.-old lambs (48), reared worm-free from birth, were allocated to 6 groups and offered ad lib a complete diet containing 139 g crude protein/kg DM [dry matter]. One group was killed at the outset as initial control (CI). Further groups, ALC, 1, 2, 3 and 4 were dosed daily for 84 days with 0, 1000, 3000, 5000 and 5000 larvae of O. circumcincta, respectively. Lambs in group 4 also received anthelmintic (fenbendazole, 5 mg/kg) on days 21, 42, 63 and 84. Lambs were killed after 98 days and their carcasses and those of the initial controls analyzed for fat, protein and mineral contents. None of the lambs showed obvious clinical signs of infection and mean Ostertagia burdens at slaughter were 6180, 2880, 5700 and 0 for groups 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. DM intake was reduced by 5.6, 7.5, 12.2 and 12.5% and live-weight gain was only 90, 75, 53 and 66%, respectively, in groups 1-4 compared with values in group ALC. Apparent digestibility of N was reduced by 38-53% in the infected groups by wk 4, but returned to control levels in groups 1 and 4 by wk 7, in group 2 by wk 10 and group 3 by wk 13. Groups 2, 3 and 4 had significantly less body fat and protein than group ALC and the mineral content of the carcass was reduced in groups 2 and 3. Slight hypoalbuminemia developed from wk 3 in groups 2, 3 and 4. There was no significant effect of Ostertagia on serum total protein or urea concentrations. Histological examination of the abomasa showed mucosal hypertrophy with depletion of parietal cells in groups 1, 2 and 3 and only mild focal lesions in group 4. Intakes > 1000 Ostertagia larvae/day reduced the gross efficiency of use of metabolizable energy for growth and this effect was not eliminated by regular treatment with anthelmintic.
