SIR,-A recent Home Office letter sent to regional scientific advisers casts doubt on the accuracy of certain figures given in The Medical Effects of Nuclear War.'I began my career as a scientific officer at the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, Aldermaston, working on weapons trials. Subse-quently I becamea priest, but I kept up my scientific interests and eventually took training as a scientific adviser for Berkshire. Therefore with some knowledge I can make the following statements:(a) all figures given in The Medical Effects of Nuclear War are substan-tially accurate;(b) a number of errors are easily found in the Scientific Advisers' Training Manual;(c) there is no possibility of adequate civil defence of the United Kingdom in the event of nuclear war;(d) even if Home Office figures were correct, a nuclear war would devastate the country in a horrific way beyond either medical or civil defence capacity to effect any but the most primitive recovery. It is perhaps notable that when I wrote to the Home Office to ask for a copy of their letter to regional scientific advisers my request was refused; furthermore, I found the training offered to scientific advisers in-adequate in certain important respects.
