Dear Editor, Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness and significantly increases social and economic burdens. Other leading retinal causes of blindness include age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR). Epiretinal membrane (ERM) and macular hole (MH) are less likely to cause blindness but have a very high prevalence. Thus, complication with glaucoma in eyes with any of these retinal diseases is a severe problem. Therefore, there is a pressing need to evaluate the prevalence of eyes with both retinal disease and glaucoma and to clarify whether this interaction is also associated with myopia, another serious worldwide clinical problem. In this study, we investigated a large data set derived from a medical insurance database; this database contained the records of 15284 eyes with glaucoma, 3899 eyes with ERM, 1167 eyes with MH, 3474 eyes with AMD, 3906 eyes with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), and 2160 eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR)(Table 1). Our study included various subtypes of glaucoma, such as open-angle, angle-closure, normal-tension, and secondary glaucoma (Table 1 footnote), but not ocular hypertension. We determined the rate at which the retinal diseases were complicated with glaucoma, and we also determined the inverse, ie, the rate at which glaucoma was complicated with retinal diseases. Finally, we investigated the association of each of these rates of complication with refractive error. Table 1 summarizes our findings and shows the P values of an inter-group comparison.
