The experimental criteria which may be used to detect appreciable tunnel corrections in chemical reactions have been summarized in Sections 3.7 and 4.3.5.* The first clear experimental evidence for such corrections was published in 1956 in a study of the Arrhenius parameters in the abstraction of protons or deuterons from 2-ethoxycarbonylcyclopentanone [218], and since then an increasing volume of evidence has been obtained for a wide variety of reactions. A summary of such evidence was published in 1974 [117], and several striking examples have come to light subsequently.
