The influence of the social context on individual manifestations of generativity is articulated through theory-building case study analyses in this chapter. The authors begin the chapter with the presentation of a model by which scholars may study lives in context. The authors next provide a discussion of Erikson's generativity developmental concept and scholarship as perceived through a life course lens. Noting that" the narratives of gay men at midlife... provide fertile ground for exploration of the dialogic process between person and social order with respect to issues of generativity," these authors turn their attention to the structure and timing of the gay life course and embark on an in-depth exploration of generativity in the life stories of 3 gay men.
