As long as there have been employees, there have been views and strictures concerning their appropriate treatment. And as long as there have been authority structures, the issue of how to deal with what is now called the principal/agent problem-getting the help to do what you want-has been confronted. Kaufman's new book (Kaufman, 2004) is nominally a history of the International Industrial Relations Association, an affiliate of the International Labor Organization. Kaufman has written a history of" industrial relations" going back to the nineteenth century from an international perspective. The contribution of the new Kaufman volume is that it represents both location and history. And it prognosticates about the future, as well.
