The rates of rearrangement of 13 allyl p-~ X-phenyl ethers have been determined. These rates can be correlated by using the ordinary form of Hammett’s equation (log k/ko=) and+ values or an expanded form of this equation (log k/kt,= pmam+). The values of p thus determined are interpreted in terms of possible polar mechanisms for the or/Zzo-Claisen re-arrangement. This polar character of the reaction is also supported by preliminary observations on solvent effects.
