Hooded rats (101) were fed from weaning on a purified diet supplemented with adequate amounts of all known vitamins except pantothenic acid. Groups were dosed daily with 25, 50 or 100 [mu]g pantothenic acid, either from the beginning of the test or after 2 weeks deprivation, and responses were compared with undosed controls. Male rats appeared more sensitive than females in their growth response to pantothenlc acid, however in general very little gradation in growth response was noted among the 3 dosage level treatments. A daily dose of 25 [mu]g pantothenic acid was almost adequate for growth. but did not completely prevent greying of the black fur. Rats deprived of pantothenic acid showed significantly increased red cell counts and microcytic and hypochromic red cells.
