This article focuses on the problems of substance abuse in schizophrenia and its treatments to help therapists optimize the outcome of this dual-diagnosis population. The authors organized this review to first describe research on the prevalence, assessment, and impact of substance abuse on the course of schizophrenia. Second, they review studies on the effects of substance abuse on cognitive factors in schizophrenia and consider the implications of these effects for treatment. Third, the authors summarize the principles of treating substance abusing schizophrenia patients, and review the limited treatment outcome research in this area, and identify avenues for future research that may improve the efficacy of existing treatment technologies.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
