The article discusses a practical clinical approach to the treatment of nicotine dependence in adolescents. Cigarette smoking, at least in the United States, is predominantly a pediatric disorder and causes significant morbidity and mortality; tobacco is related to more than 400,000 deaths in the United States annually. Cigarette smoking in adolescence affects lung function and bone growth and may cause increased risk of depressive disorder. Nicotine withdrawal can become a significant issue among adolescents admitted to locked inpatient psychiatric units because they are not allowed to smoke. Many adolescents with psychiatric disorders smoke cigarettes and child and adolescent psychiatrists are in a unique position to help adolescent smokers quit smoking because many of our patients smoke cigarettes. Nicotine withdrawal symptoms, particularly in locked adolescent inpatient settings where smoking is banned, can mimic psychiatric symptoms (eg, anxiety, irritability). The transdermal nicotine patch (TNP) use may aid in nicotine withdrawal in those inpatient settings. The TNP and bupropion SR, along with behavior therapy, may be useful for the treatment of adolescent nicotine dependence.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
