The mannose 6-phosphate (M6P) receptor transports lysosomal enzymes to lysosomes [11. Because this receptor also binds IGF-ll, it is known as the IGF-II/M6P receptor. Although the binding sites for lysosomal enzymes and IGF-ll are distinct, reciprocal inhibition of binding between IGF-Il and lysosomal enzymes has been observed in the mammalian IGF-ll/M6P re-ceptor [2, 31. Although most of the IGF-Il/M6P receptor is found intracellularly (where it functions to direct newly synthesized lysosomal enzymes to lysosomes), some receptors cycle to and from the plasma membrane (where extracellular lysosomal enzymes and IGF-ll bind to the receptor and are internalized)
