PERHAPS the greatest focus of attention in recent years regarding the functions of the basal ganglia (ie caudate nucleus, putamen, globus pallidus and substantia nigra) has been given to examining the interrelationships between the striatum (caudate and putamen) and the substantia nigra (SN).
