gland of the spiny dogfish, Squalus, specifically secretes sodium chloride at about twice the plasma concentration and in volumes sufficient to play a significant role in the salt economy of this fish (Burger and Hess, 1960). Experiments and observations are reported herein which attempt to block out the various parameters of function. Recently, the mechanisms for the excretion of salt have been defined for marine birds (cf. Schmidt-Nielsen, 1960, for a summary). The data below indicate some fundamental differences between the dogfish and the marine bird.
