Change of Anthropogenic Disturbances and Its Influence on Wild Tea Survival in Shiiba, Japan. The use of traditional agricultural practices has been declining in much of the world. It is therefore essential to identify the functional links that connect human activities (i.e., livelihoods, land uses) and ecosystem components, and to understand the principles (i.e., ecological mechanisms) underlying those links in planning future local development and environmental conservation practices. In the Kyushu mountains in Japan, swidden farming (shifting cultivation) almost disappeared in the early 1960s, and the landscape shifted to plantations and secondary forests. In these areas, wild tea (Camellia sinensisvar.sinensis), a useful plant that dominated in the early swidden fallow stage, often dominates the forest floor. We conducted a field survey and found that wild tea seemed to be surviving depending on the anthropogenic disturbances ofQuercus acutissimasilviculture (logging and weeding), which were similar to swidden farming in disturbance frequency. This relationship seemed to contribute to maintaining the functional link between land use and an ecosystem component (wild tea), and to the link between that component and local people bykamairi–cha(pan–fried green tea) production. Also, wild tea’s response to the anthropogenic disturbances was observed as a response trait, and root biomass of wild tea seemed to contribute to maintaining its population.
