Ferritin is a cage-shaped protein with a nanometer-sized interior space (7–8 nm in diameter),[1] in which a variety of inorganic nanoparticles including oxidized Fe,[2] oxidized Co,[3] oxidized U,[4] CdSe,[5] and CdS [6] can be biomineralized. This nanoparticle-containing ferritin is a promising building block for nanofabrication; however, the methods for siteselective assembly of ferritin on an inorganic matrix are not yet established. We engineered the gene for the L chain of horse ferritin so that a short peptide aptamer (against titanium [7] or carbon nanohorns [8]) would be appended at its N-terminal. The reconstituted ferritin-like cage proteins re-
