This paper analyzes how to measure the distance between opinions. We introduce six axioms that a measure of disagreement should satisfy, and characterize all the functions that satisfy them. The disagreement measures we characterize generalize the Renyi divergences, and include the Kullback-Leibler divergence and the Bhattacharyya distance. We study the properties of the disagreement functions, showing how they relate to each other and how the disagreement between Bayesian agents changes when new public information is observed.
