When the foot bears weight, the pressure under the sole is shared by the calcaneus and the heads of all five metatarsals. Abramson ( '27), Elftman ( '34), Morton ( '35) and Jones ( '41) have shown that each of these points of support bears a fairly definite proportion of the load. What takes place in the structures which lie between the ankle and the areas of support a t the base of the foot is not clear. I n general, the bending effect of the load tends to flatten the longitudinal arch producing stresses that compress the joints along the dorsum of the foot and tense the plantar ligaments. The distribution of these internal forces, and their relationship to the anatomy of the foot have long been topics of speculation. Detailed interpretations, however shrewd, should be considered tentative as long as the facts to support them are lacking. One question which requires a more definite answer is the consideration of how much force is brought to bear on individual foot bones a t internal points. Under simple conditions of static loading the compression forces between separate bones have been measured in cadaver feet. These data have been correlated with the mechanics of weight-bearing, and with the structure of the foot. METHODS
