Rabbits respond to treatment with Crotalus atrox venom with a biophasic basopenic response. The lecithinase A content of snake venom may satisfactorily account for the rapid depletion of basophils in rabbit blood, while other mechanisms, possibly endocrine, may account for the delayed response. Constituents other than lecithinase A are responsible for the major portion of the lethal action of Crotalus atrox venom in rabbits.
