The Mossbauer effect has been used for a systematic study of samples synthesized at intervals of 5% or less in the hematite-ilmenite solid solution series xFeTiO3·(1-x)Fe2O3. The following are significant observations resulting from this study: 1) All Fe2+ cations in hematiterich samples participate in electron transfer with an equal number of Fe3+ cations. Transfer continues for values of x as great as 0.60, but no transfer is observed in the region 0.75<x<1.00; 2) Heat-treated samples for x=0.55 and 0.60 show different Mossbauer spectra than their quenched equivalents. These spectra are consistent with the interpretation that heat-treated samples have a more ordered lattice with only part of the Fe2+ cations participating in electron transfer; 3) Contrary to earlier reports, there is no paramagnetic behavior below the Neel temperatures of ilmenite-rich samples, although superparamagnetic behavior may exist; 4) The hyperfine field strength for Fe2+ decreases suddenly in the same region that electron transfer ceases (0.60<x<0.75), but Fe3+ hyperfine fields are consistently about 500koe.
