Batch shaking adsorption experiments were conducted to estimate potentiality of fly ash (FA) and impregnated fly ash (IFA) in removing phenols from aqueous solution. Efficiency of phenol removal varied from 9 to 46 percent. Impregnated fly ash (IFA) has shown better efficiency of phenol removal than fly ash (FA). It was observed that polar substituted phenols having less steric hindrance are better adsorbed than others. Substituted phenols with hindered group is less adsorbed than phenol (m-nitrophenol > o-nitrophenol > phenol > m-cresol > o-cresol). The adsorption data follow the Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The removal mechanism of phenols is explained due to chemical coagulation with metallic oxides
