To establish current distribution of sarcoptic mange in raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in Japan and to examine the impact of sarcoptic mange epizootics on the population dynamics df raccoon dogs, we conducted a nation-wide questionnaire survey. Raccoon dogs with mange were reported as found and/or protected in 11 of 47 prefectures throughout Japan in the years 1987-1992. Mangy adults were most often protected during winter and spring, indicating that the survival of infected animals during winter was difficult. The number of mangy adults protected each year increased rapidly, a few years after numbers of non-mangy adults protected increased. A drastic decline in the peak in mangy adults. Increasing host densities may allow the parasites to increase and spread, and at high host population densities sarcoptic mange epizootics may occur, resulting in potentially fatal declines of host populations.
