Children (320) were studied during chewing. The outlines of the masticatory movements were registered. An individually characteristic chewing pattern could be recorded although the variation in form of the masticatory movements of the mandible was considerable. Seven different patterns of chewingwere demonstrated. No relationship between pattern of chewing and type of malocclusion was found. The most frequently occurring masticatory movement in children with malocclusion of the teeth was a chopping stroke, but great individual variations in the form of the movement was found. Cases with "normal" occlusion had a half-ellipsoid chewing pattern with less individual variation in form.
