The Buddhist sutra which will be discussed below is a very short composition. It spans only six pages. Originally it was translated from Sanskrit into Chinese by I Ch'eng (A.D. 635-713)1 of the T'ang Dynasty, one of the established translators of Buddhist sutras, and it was presented to the Empress Tse T'ien Wu Hou some time around A.D. 700. The sutra was then probably brought into Japan by one of the many Japanese priests or students who visited China in those days, and was then copied by a Japanese copyist from its Chinese original.
