MethodsDuring the routine examinations, partLcLpants were interviewed to ascertain socioeconomic, dietary, and medical data. A physical examination oriented to detection of cardiovascular disease was done. The total vital capacity was measured and an electrocardiogram taken. Urine was examined for glucose and albumin, and blood for hematocrit, glucose, cholesterol, and glyceride levels. Details of the study design and laboratory methods are presented elsewhere (Colon et al., 1969).Subjects were reexamined every 2 1/2-3 years. On the death of a participant, medical information was sought from the hospital, physician, or next of kin. Results of all autopsies were obtained. Pathologists and morgue attendants at two locations performing most of the autopsies in the area were altered to identify cases that might belong to the study population, and to save the coronary arteries and aortas for special studies. For a variety of reasons related to work conditions, fewer than half the possible specimens were collected.
