Antidepressant prescription and suicide rates: effect of age and gender.

To determine whether the effect of antidepressant exposure on suicide rate is modified by age and gender in Hungary, annual antidepressant use and suicide rates of 10,000,000 inhabitants were analyzed by age and gender groups. The suicide rate correlated negatively with increased use of antidepressants in both genders. The strongest association was found in the oldest age groups, where the increase in antidepressant use was highest, while there was no association in the under-20 or 50–69 age groups in either gender. Antidepressant rate predicted suicide rate after controlling for divorce rate or unemployment rate but not after covarying for alcohol consumption rate.
