Recent developments in the study of the genetics ofRhizobiumare reviewed. The classification of the Rhizobiaceae is outlined. Gene transfer and vectors, mutagenesis and markers, plasmids and the basic molecular biology ofRhizobiumare discussed. Metabolic and nodulation genes, the cell surface of rhizobia and their exopolysaccharides, lipopolysaccharides, β-1,2-glucans, andRhizobiumchemotaxis are described. The nature ofnif, fixanddctgenes and their regulation are examined.
