Discusses problems faced by adolescents with chronic disabilities and addresses issues of pubertal maturation, social-emotional development, family, and optimal development. The marked improvement in medical technology has resulted in more adolescents entering puberty while on life-sustaining equipment, older adolescents entering adulthood with a condition that used to be fatal in childhood, and children maturing into adolescence with the sequelae of prenatal insults. Research suggests that for such adolescents, puberty may be associated with self-rejection and depression. Overprotection from parents can also lead to lowered self-esteem and increased anxiety in adolescents with chronic illness or disability. Factors associated with autonomy include family and peer support, involvement with household duties, and having friends with and without disabilities.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
