THEINCIDENCE OF HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS TYPE 1 (HIV-1) is variable in different countries in Africa, as well as in different population centers. Although urban groups likely have the highest rates, the epidemic is also found in rural areas. In a population-based study conducted in the Mara region of northwest Tanzania in 1989 and 1990,'residents of rural vil-lages that lie proximate to a truck route that goes around Lake Victoria from Uganda to Kenya had an HIV-1 seroprevalence of 2.6%. The overall HIV-1 prevalence in the study area (urban, perurban, and rural) was 7.3%. We report here initial find-ings on genotypic variation of HIV-1 from this rural East
