Calculations based upon the number, length, and diams. of roots and root hairs were made on a 4 months'' old winter rye plant. There were 13,815,672 roots in the categories (main, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary) with an exposed surface of 2,554.09 sq. ft. Diameters or roots were characteristic of the categories to which they belonged. Living root hairs covered all roots and numbered 14,335,568,288 with a total surface area of 4,321.31 sq. ft. The total exposed subterranean surface represents the potential soil contact surface of a single plant in binding soil. The subterranean surface was 130 times that of the external top surface area.
