Using the method of intermittent initiation (sector method) in combination with steady state measurements, an absolute determination of the rate constants of all elementary reactions of the polymerization process is carried out. In these measurements the viscosity of the solvent is varied by a factor of 170 and the degree of polymerisation by a factor of 20. It is found that the radical efficiency decreases, when the viscosity is increased, and that the rate of chain termination is inversely proportional to the viscosity and is completely independent of the degree of polymerization of the polymer radicals. An interpretation of the radical efficiency is attempted using the concept of the cage effect. The findings concerning the chain termination are explained by a model mechanism, which assumes a practically unhindered mutual penetration of the polymer molecules during self-diffusion.
