This chapter discusses the current practices and emerging new methods of environmental data visualization, exploration, and intercomparison in the particular context of the “fluid earth sciences,” namely meteorology, oceanography, and climate science. The discussion is also highly relevant to other areas of study of the Earth system, particularly where large, multidimensional datasets are involved. The chapter begins by providing an overview of the many varieties of data with which scientists must get to grips, and the characteristics and capabilities of the tools that are in current common use. It describes the current state of informatics and infrastructure that underpin current tools and methods. It also explains some new approaches in the form of specific software applications and infrastructures, ranging in complexity from visualization‐only systems to those that support quantitative processing and intercomparison, highlighting the scientific applications and the recent technological advances that have enabled them.Controlled Vocabulary Termsquantitative variables; statistical data; statistical software
