The goal of the Society for Craniofacial Genetics and Developmental Biology (SCGDB) is to promote education, research, and communication about normal and abnormal development of the tissues and organs of the head. The SCGDB welcomes as members undergraduate students, graduate students, post doctoral researchers, clinicians, orthodontists, scientists and academicians who share an interest in craniofacial biology. Each year our members come together to share their novel findings, build upon, and challenge current knowledge of craniofacial biology. The 37th annual meeting of the SCGDB was held on October 18, 2014 at the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine in beautiful LaJolla, California. Society members from the USA and abroad came together for a day of scientific talks and a dynamic poster session, capped by an awards ceremony where excellence in science was celebrated among our junior members. The program was designed around themes that reflect current issues in craniofacial biology, with invited speakers being leaders in their respective fields. After a general call for abstracts, additional podium presentations were selected from among submitted abstracts. The inclusion of junior members among the podium presenters signifies the philosophy of the Society that strives to build a relaxed but professional atmosphere where scientists at all career levels come together to discuss topics of mutual interest. A strong and unifying emphasis on uncovering mechanisms of craniofacial development, disease, disorders and repair made this an exciting and important meeting. The first part of the day-long meeting filled with talks and discussion was capped by a poster session and competition. The SCGDB supports junior investigators in craniofacial biology by awarding prizes to the most meritorious poster presentations by postdoctoral and graduate student attendees. The monetary awards recognize exciting work by junior researchers and help offset the costs of travel and meeting registration. This year, the poster session and prizes were made possible by support from the American Association of Anatomists, the Society for Developmental Biology, and Wiley. Posters were judged by SCGDB members Drs. Matthew Harris, Trevor Williams, Robert Cornell, Steve Goudy and Mark Leid. Awards for postdoctoral fellows were made to Drs. Hu Zhao (USC), Christopher Percival (University of Calgary) and Katrin Henke (Harvard Medical School). Graduate level awardees wereKristin Watt (Stowers Institute for Medical Research), Cynthia Neben (USC) and Dennis Okello (University of Saskatchewan). Here, we present a brief overview of the 2014 meeting followed by abstracts of the talks and posters presented at the meeting. Plans for the 38th annual meeting of the SCGDB to be held in Baltimore, MD are available on our website (craniofacialgenetics. org).
