Cancer is the second most common cause of mortality in the United States and resulted in >550,000 deaths in 2004. Cancer researchers have been making rapid advances in understanding the biologic origin of cancer, the genetic changes that predispose to it, and the signaling pathways involved in the carcinogenesis process itself. Such insights lend direction to present and future attempts to treat cancer. The developing field of cancer stem cell biology is one of the most exciting of these advances.
