The effective i.v. dose of angiotensin II for the induction of drinking in the rat was reduced to a physiologically reasonable level of about 10 ng/min per rat or 25 ng/min per kg. It could be as low as 4 ng/min per rat when the natural state of thirst was more closely simulated with concurrent cellular dehydration. These doses were not different from those employed i.v. in the intact mammal to produce the hormone''s pressor response. The drinking produced by the hormone occurred sooner and more reliably and was greater in volume when the hormone was combined with mild cellular dehydration. The drinking was blocked by a specific competitive inhibitor of angiotensin II, but was not affected by diurnal cycle. That angiotensin II is a normal participant in drinking provoked by hypovolemia was supported.
