Investigated the psycho-physics of the motor impulse, when the limbs were placed in unusual positions. A series of experiments were conducted on the Japanese illusion and the mirror illusions. Japanese illusion occurs when the S's arms are crossed and hands clasped thumbs down, and turned thumbward till they point up; under such conditions, the S is usually unable to move any finger pointed to. The mirror illusion can be created by inverting the spaces of the real world in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the mirror. Varying numbers of Ss participated in the series. It was found that the visual factors controlled the movement of the limbs. This was evident from the disappearance of the illusions when touch was added to vision, or when the stimulus was auditory. There were individual differences in the control of fingers amongst the Ss.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
