C. chlamydogama Bold, C. reinhardti Dangeard, C. eugametos Moewus and C. moewusii Gerloff exhibit 8 haploid chromosomes at mitotic divisions, a count which is considerably lower than that previously reported by other investigators for each of the last 3 organisms named. When grown at 800 foot-candles of continuous illumination, C. eugametos and C. moewusii undergo polyploidy to varying degrees, with subsequent somatic reduction to the haploid number occurring independently of light. The phenomenon is not observed in the other 2 species studied. Mitosis and meiosis are essentially similar to that observed in most higher plants. Other details of cell behavior during division are reported. Two special modifications of the aceto-carmine staining technique are described in detail as they were developed for use in this study. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: N. D. Buffaloe
