The context for this symposium is outlined, indicating reasons for the emphasis on outcome studies that focus on technique rather than therapist personal qualities. Current trends are critiqued in light of the symposium presentations, and suggestions for the future are provided. Future research needs to take into account humanistic, phenomenological, agentive, and postmodern perspectives as opposed to the present overemphasis on mechanistic/naturalistic conceptions of causality and therapeutic change processes.
