Preliminary measurements have been made on the electrical resistivity and thermoelectric power of plutonium oxide in the composition range of PuO1.70to PuO2.00from 20 to 1000° C. The normalPuO2−xcomposition which results from the vacuum sintering of PuO2has been shown to exhibit p-type conductivity at room temperature. This changes on heating to n-type which is characteristic of oxygen deficientPuO2−tx. Room temperature resistivity and low temperature activation energy varies directly with oxygen content. The activation energy for electronic conduction forPuO2−xis 0.52 eV over a wide range of oxygen content, while the intrinsic activation energy for PuO2is 1.8 eV.
